A Self-Investing Account allows you to trade directly in the U.S. stock market from anywhere in the world. It is designed for those who prefer to manage their own investment strategies independently. Below is an overview of the key features to help you navigate your account.
The Dashboard (Home Screen)
Upon logging in, you will see your primary account information.
- Performance View: Your Total Account Balance is displayed alongside a performance chart with various time-range filters.
- Activity: Below the chart, you will find your current Portfolio Positions, your Watchlist (Favorites), and any Pending Orders. Clicking on any position or watchlist item will take you to the detailed asset view.
- Navigation (Mobile): In the top-right corner, you have three options: Balance, Search (Magnifying glass), and More. Under "More," you can access Documents, History, and Rename your account.
- Navigation (Web): These options are conveniently located at the top of the screen.
Using the Search Tool
Whether on mobile or web, finding an asset is seamless.
- Mobile: Tap the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner.
- Web: Use the search bar located directly above the main chart.
- How to search: You can enter the Ticker Symbol (e.g., AAPL) or the full company name. Once selected, the screen will display the real-time market price, performance charts, key metrics, and relevant news. To execute a trade, simply tap the "Trade" button.
How to Buy and Sell
Investing at Folionet is designed to be fast and accessible.
- Search for the asset or select it directly from your portfolio.
- Tap the "Trade" button.
- Parameters: Select whether you want to Buy or Sell, then choose the Order Type and enter the amount (in dollars) or the number of shares.
- Note: Every transaction in a Self-Investing Account has a flat processing fee of $0.98. For more details on execution styles, visit our Order Types section.
Short Selling
To perform a Short Sell, you must have a Plus Account (Margin) with a balance exceeding $2,000. This feature is intended for experienced investors.
- Process: Search for the ticker, tap "Trade," and select "Short Sell" as the transaction type.
- Flexibility: You can set specific parameters or execute at the current market price.
- Restrictions: Not all symbols are "shortable." Availability is updated daily by our Clearing Firm based on internal criteria. Additionally, you cannot short a stock that you currently hold as a "Long" position in your portfolio.
Buy to Cover
The "Buy to Cover" option is used exclusively to close out existing short positions.
- To close a short, find the ticker in your portfolio, tap "Trade," and select "Buy to Cover." You can then define your closing parameters or execute at market price to exit the position.
Canceling an Order
Limit and Stop orders may remain active for days or weeks if their price targets aren't met.
- How to Cancel: Go to your Dashboard and locate the Pending Orders section. Select the order you wish to cancel and confirm.
- Modifications: To change an active order, you must first cancel it and then place a new one with the updated parameters.
- Important: Market Orders placed outside of regular hours (9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET) can only be canceled if they involve whole shares. Fractional market orders cannot be canceled and will execute automatically at the next market open.
